Tessa Thompson is helping the LGBTQ community take over the big screen one character at a time.
Marvel just dropped a major bombshell for the next Thor movie. Tessa Thompson gay superhero, famous for her role as Valkyrie, is going to be the new king of Asgard, but she’ll rule with a woman sitting next to her.
Tessa Thompson’s character will be gay, which also marks the first openly gay Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero in history. Not to mention, it’s a special role for Tessa herself. She came out of the closet in 2018, as bisexual. She’s been linked to dating Janelle Monae.
Tessa made the big reveal while at this year’s Comic-Con on Saturday.
“As new King, she needs to find her new queen, so that’ll be her first order of business, she has some ideas. I’ll keep you posted.”
Tessa say’s that she’s always known her character’s true sexuality, but for audiences, it may have been a little harder to tell. During filming, there were a few moments when Valkyrie’s character dropped clues about which sex she preferred, but the scenes were ultimately deleted from the finished film, says The Blast.
“In the canon, [Valkyrie] is bisexual. You see her with women and men, so that was my intention in playing her. Obviously, at the forefront of most of these stories is not typically their romantic life. They have big stakes, like saving the world, so that tends to sort of trump.”
At a time when everyone’s fighting for inclusivity, it’s definitely going to make a big difference for the LGBTQ community. Seeing someone who identifies as YOU on screen is a big win.
Just ask the cast of Black Panther. They’re still celebrating an all-black Wakanda!
