Victims have a mixture of feelings when it comes down to R. Kelly’s prison sentence. R. Kelly, the ultimate R&B sensation, is serving 30 years for sex trafficking and racketeering. The sentencing has directly impact R. Kelly’s mental state. In fact, the courts order mental health treatment as part of the sentence for sex crimes, according to The Source. After his release, he must avoid any woman under the age of 18. Once he reaches his release, the Chicago native will be under supervision for five years. That is another layer that will impact R. Kelly’s mental state.
Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s representative, argued with the jury that the decision should not be based on “inflamed emotions”, but instead the nature of the charges. She also advocated that Kelly was sexually abused as a child and lived in an unstable environment. During trial, six women testified about their experiences with the convict.
With all of this, it’s still not over! He is currently awaiting a sentencing in Chicago for obstruction and child pornography charges.
How does all of this speak for R. Kelly’s mental state?
R. Kelly: Is R. Kelly on suicide watch?
CBS New York reported that the artist was removed from suicide watch at Brooklyn jail on July 5. R. Kelly’s attorney’s would file a lawsuit against federal prosecutors for placing the singer on suicide watch as a form of punishment. If this is true, will he receive the right help if he truly needs it?
To Sum it Up a Little
It is unfortunate to see African American men in positions like this, in a system already in place to destroy them. For Black women, this is a slippery slope. Imagine being a fan for years to find your favorite artist is a predator? In matters like this, Black women are split between supporting and admonishing a Black man. For women who choose to continue appreciating his talent still may be subject to social scrutiny. For those who admonish Kelly, will lose respect for such great talent.
Above all, HypeFresh is happy that the law is listening to Black women. Stay tuned for updates on R. Kelly’s mental state.
