New Nike Air Foamposite On its way

In 1997, Nike’s Advanced Product Engineering team led by Eric Avar took on a task that would change the game of basketball shoes forever. Inspired by the aerodynamic properties of a garden beetle, Foamposite was the first shoe to utilize a unique polyurethane foam injected into a mold, rather than molded into leather or textile-like other sneaker constructions. The result was a seamless upper that sucks around the foot, allowing it to change shape and contour to the wearer’s foot over time.

The technology wasn’t cheap to make. In fact, to get a pair of the first Foamposite Ones to market, Nike had to spend $750,000 on five times stronger molds than traditional shoe ones.

While this is a huge expense, it was well worth the investment. As a bonus, the Foamposite Pro’s incredibly seamless construction allowed for a sleeker look than any other shoe on the market. It also made it easier to manufacture the shoes, resulting in a higher production rate that ultimately led to the Foamposite One’s $180 price tag.

Since its introduction, Nike has continued to use this innovative technology on several sneakers, including the Air Foamposite One and Foamposite Pro. The original Foamposite One drew much attention for its lack of a Nike Swoosh logo, but it’s the Foamposite Pro that has become known for its durability and performance on the court.

Although there are better shoes on the market today, the Foamposite Pro is a worthy retro and remains as impressive as ever for its price. It’s a good option for larger players who love to cut and slash to the basket, but it can be a difficult shoe to break in – especially if you’re not used to a more rigid construction.

If you want to buy a pair of the original Foamposite One, you can find them at many major retailers. Prices range from around $170 to $275, and if you’re looking for a sneaker that will last you through your entire career, this is a great option.

Another Nike Air Foamposite One is on the way for 2023

Following up on its “Metallic Red” release, a reported “White” version of the Foamposite One will debut later this summer. Currently, it’s unclear whether this 2023 edition will feature the same White colorway that Penny Hardaway wore during his rookie season in ’97 but if so, we hope it’ll be a limited run.

The Air Foamposite One’s incredibly versatile design has led to countless coveted collaborations with some of the world’s best designers. For instance, 2021’s COMME des GARCONS x Foamposite One was a must have for any fan of the Japanese label’s avant-garde aesthetic.

Meanwhile, the Supreme project from 2014 featured a unique Foamposite shell with a gold floral pattern. Finally, the CDG collab from 2021 incorporated a water ripple-inspired design that completely transformed the silhouette’s look.

Aside from being a great throwback, the Foamposite Pro’s tech-forward design has helped it become a favorite of collectors over the years. It’s no surprise that fans continue to hold on to their original Foamposite Ones, and that they are still a staple amongst sneakerheads today. The only problem is that they’re a bit pricey for most people to afford.
