Known for his distinctly gruff and chaotic approach to melody, Florida rapper Rod Wave’s voice overflows with soul and emotion.
Pledging his allegiance to the grind and pouring one out for his friends doing time, Rod Wave shares “Jan2Jan,” his latest video single. Dominated by plaintive piano chords, “Jan2Jan” is an ideal canvas for Rod’s unique vocal talent, as he twists and stretches syllables in his gruff baritone, crooning one bar and rapping double time on the next. Shot in a single take, the video for “Jan2Jan” follows an inmate in an abusive mental asylum as she attempts to escape, dancing her way through the drab halls and passing a captive Rod Wave in the basement before eventually being apprehended. Hosted on the KONCREATE YouTube channel, “Jan2Jan” is a highlight from Hunger Games 2, his buzzing project released in May 2018.
A rapper from St. Petersburg, Florida, Rod Wave started to build a regional buzz off the strength of his Hunger Games series and collaborations with peers such as GlokkNine. Two of his most recent singles, “Valid,” and “Heart 4 Sale,” have been bubbling in the South, with the former earning a place on Spotify’s Most Necessary playlist. Earning praise from Kevin Gates and Moneybagg Yo for his penchant for catchy melody, Rod is just getting started.
