Dune Debuts At The Top Of Box Office With $40 Million

Dune, a new film released this past Thursday appears to be one of Warner Bros.’s most ambitious projects this year. Director Denis Villeneuve’s works include Sicario, Arrival, and Prisoners. The movie demonstrates how he captured the scale and complexity of the novel written by Frank Herbert.

Certainly, this film does more than bring a science fiction story to life. In fact, it shows philosophical, social-political effects of the cost of colonization. Hence, blinding themselves over religious doctrines.

If this isn’t enough, Dune contains a star-studded cast include Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Fergurson, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, and Stellan Kargard.

The main focus of Dune is that Chalamet has a lot of promise, eventually becoming an heir to his family’s dynasty.

Considering that, box office numbers came in, and debuted at 40.1 million dollars during opening weekend in the US and Canada. Despite those early cinematic release numbers, the movie is also on the streaming service HBO Max.

Warner Bros. launched the production from Legendary Entertainment simultaneously to theaters and HBO Max. When this study occurred with all the premieres in 2021. Due to the pandemic, it became a mystery how successfully Dune would be. Villeneuve objected to the decision.

“I strongly believe that the future of cinema lies in the big screen, regardless of what any Wall Street amateur thinks,” Villeneuve told Variety.

    Box Office Success

The production company maintained its decision to launch their films only in theaters next year. For now Dune had a budget of 165 million, which represented a better domestic premiere than other hybrid launches from the studio. It surpassed 31.7 million dollars, Godzilla vs. Kong in March. Dune was expected to make between 30 to 35 million in the box office.

Furthermore, adding on international box office sales, Dune amassed another 47.4 million (including a $21 million debut in China). In addition to overseas sales, a total of $180 million. Overall, the film grossed $220 million globally.
