Did Deion “Primetime” Sanders Turn His Back on His People?

The beloved and praised NFL Hall of Famer Deion “Primetime” Sanders has appeared to make many angry or disappointed with his latest decision. As many know, he took an HC job at Jackson State University and single handily brought the most attention arguably HBCUs have ever seen to the world of football. Sanders made it exciting to watch HBCU football again, let alone, Jackson State University.

Not to mention, he took the No.1 recruit in the country, Travis Hunter, and flipped him from Florida State University to Jackson State University. This is unprecedented and never has been done before, taking a top-five recruit and getting him to de-commit and play for a far less resourced school.

Yet, Sanders continues to build JSU, and this season not only wins the SWAC but also remains undefeated which has never been done in JSU football history, according to Bleacher Report. In three seasons, Sanders has only lost five games throughout his reign at JSU, according to New York Times.

However, once an opportunity to presented itself to advance to a better position it appeared Sanders took it and didn’t look back at all. Many considered the decision selfish and disingenuous of Sanders, however, there were many who defended Sanders in his decision.

Deion “Primetime” Sanders Taking Over Colorado Buffaloes Football Program

There’s no secret, Sanders built a force to be reckoned with over at JSU. Not only was the brand of football polarizing but they absolutely dominated on and off the field with talented transfers and naturally attracting high school recruits.

While he’s done legendary things at Jackson State University it almost seemed inevitable that he’d be someday considered for a position in a Power five conference.

Sanders will have his hands full with this new program. Since 2006, Colorado has posted only two winning seasons. With that being said, he’s taking on one of the country’s biggest rebuilding challenges.

“There were a number of highly qualified and impressive candidates interested in becoming the next head football coach at Colorado, but none of them had the pedigree, the knowledge, and the ability to connect with student-athletes like Deion Sanders,” Rick George, the Colorado athletic director, said in a statement. “Not only will Coach Prime energize our fan base, but I’m also confident that he will lead our program back to national prominence while leading a team of high quality and high character.”

Sander’s first press conference as Colorado’s HC went beyond great. Many fans around the country were excited for him and believe he was going to turn the program around. He left little to no doubt to compete and dominate during the press conference.

“All you want is an opportunity to win, to compete, to dominate, to be amongst the elite, to be amongst the best,” Sanders, addressing the athletic director, said Sunday. “And, darn it, I’m going to give you that.”

Is the Outrage Warranted for Deion Sander’s Departure?

While understanding both sides, many are upset and feel betrayed by Sanders. However, the whole goal for marginalized groups is to infiltrate places of work where it’s dominated by Caucasian men and help diversify the work environment. The whole point and goal are to get more individuals who look similar to Sanders to be involved and have more power to propel others in the future.

It’s alarming how much hate was distributed toward Sanders for bettering his situation and ultimately giving other Black coaches and players future opportunities.
