Leukemia’s reign of terror may all come to an end soon. Mel Greaves, a cancer scientist, proposed an idea for a yogurt drink (or “yoghurt” for you UK readers) that would fight the disease.
Leukemia, also known as blood cancer, usually hinders the white blood cells’ ability to fight infections. And though forms of treatment can cure it, they often leave lifelong side effects. But Greaves’ new discovery may have an answer.
One of the causes of Leukemia comes from living in overly-clean spaces. As a result, a child’s immune system may not build the defenses needed to fight infection. According to The Guardian, Greaves’s answer lies in introducing microbes (bacteria) to children in yogurt drinks. It could also end a number of other diseases as well:
“This cocktail of microbes would be given, not as a pill, but perhaps as yoghurt-like drink to very young children…it would not just help prevent them getting childhood Leukaemia. Cases of conditions such as type 1 diabetes and allergies are also rising in the West and have also been linked to our failure to expose babies to bacteria to prime children’s immune systems. So, such a drink would help cut numbers of cases of these conditions as well.”
Fuckin science bro…
