You Gotta be Shittin’ Me? Certain Underwear Lead to Rape?

You Gotta be Shittin

Women are pissed off after a rape victim is blamed for her rape. Earlier this month, Irish Twitter users bombarded Twitter with pictures of women’s underwear, in protest of an Irish lawyer who victim blamed a 17-year-old girl. The incident, involving a 27-year-old man, occurred in Cork, Ireland. The accused claims that the act was consensual.

“You have to look at the way she was dressed. She was wearing a thong with a lace front,” said the 27-year-old man’s defense lawyer, Elizabeth O’Connell, in her closing arguments. Shortly after, the man was found not guilty of the charges.

The verdict has led to widespread protest. Ruth Coppinger, an Irish MP, even held up a pair of thongs while in parliament. She’s on record saying, “It might seem embarrassing to show a pair of thongs here… how do you think a rape victim or a woman feels at the incongruous setting of her underwear being shown in a court?”

All up and down Twitter’s timeline, women flashed panties, displaying all different materials, colors, shapes and designs. Their hashtags used were #ThisIsNotConsent and #MeToo. Protests even made it’s way to the streets. Women filled the walkways outside a courthouse in Cork, where the trial took place. There was an estimate of at least 200 women in attendance.

More protests are scheduled for Friday, in Waterford in the south-east.
