    Trump’s Criminal Defense Attorney Is an Atlanta Hip-Hop Legend

    When it comes to hip hop culture, Atlanta has long been considered the center of gravity. Home to artists such as T.I., Gucci Mane, Ludacris and Young Thug, the city has spawned a rich musical legacy that can be found around the world.

    Trump has recently added a new attorney to his legal team. The former Florida solicitor general, Chris Kise, has joined the team to represent him in the case regarding classified documents seized from his Mar-a-Lago estate by the FBI.

    The Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, born Dequantes Lamar on October 4, 1989, has been a major force in the city’s hip hop scene. He broke through to fame in 2011 through the power of his live show and the dedication of his fans.

    Atlanta’s top prosecutors have been leaning into the controversial practice of using rap lyrics as evidence in criminal indictments, a strategy that has prompted some legislative pushback. But Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis said she plans to continue doing so.

    Trump’s new criminal defense attorney, Drew Findling, is an Atlanta-based hip-hop legend who has represented a star-studded list of rap artists including Cardi B, Migos and Gucci Mane. He’s also a criminal lawyer who has handled a variety of cases involving public officials and gang investigations.

    The YSL indictment is the latest of many prosecutors have used a law called Georgia RICO (the Racketeering Influenced and Corruptions Act), originally designed to take down the mafia, against rappers. It cites Thug’s “Halftime” video in which his former tour manager Jimmy “PeeWee” Winfrey is shown allegedly shooting up Lil Wayne’s tour bus and prosecutors say the footage shows Thug “intent to commit a crime.”

    While rap artists on the East and West coasts battled for superiority, rappers in Atlanta stayed true to their roots and became nationally known. Yung Ralph, an Atlanta-based rapper, has been a consistent presence on the scene for several years.

    Yung Ralph has collaborated with many of the top rappers in Atlanta including Gucci Mane and OJ Da Juiceman. He has also released numerous mixtapes throughout his career.

    Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has received death threats from members of the Bloods street gang for her prosecutions of Atlanta trap artists, including rapper Young Thug, who was arrested in May. The arrest led to a broader gang case that prosecutors say was co-founded by Thug and affiliated with the Bloods.
