The show starts as a buddy team up with Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes that tests their patience as they come off as the odd couple. That dynamic is a core feature of the show but it’s also about identity and coming into your own.

Regarding a timeline, the story directly follows the events of Avengers Endgame. Towards the end of the fim, Captain America, Steve Rodgers, passes on the torch to Sam Wilson. Ultimately, Sam Wilson must take on the mantle of Captain America.  Hesitantly, he tries to settle in this new identy, understanding the implications of serving a country that has abandoned him. Wilson’s story comes from a different POV than Rodgers whose patrioitism was honored and in turn, returned.

While many marvel fans groan about the idea of imposing a “political” storyline, it would be egregious not to explore how a hero who is black may experience the world and his role in it differently than a white superhero. Due to this struggle, Wilson continues to use the Falcon moniker in the series. Mackie added, ” Wilson is questioning how a Black man [can] represent a country that does not represent him.” Wilson eventually settles into his new identity.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is avaiable to stream on Disney +.

Primarily, the show takes place after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. It’s a reimagining or recapturing of the universe without telling the same stories. It takes the universe that George Lucas has created with respect by combining great visuals, compelling characters, and thrilling action. Plus, you have baby Yoda, to boot.
