Now that HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones has wrapped up its final season, Sophie Turner is being quite candid about her experience as Sansa Stark.
Sansa Stark is the fictional character played by Turner on GoT. At the beginning of the series, Sansa is naive about the world, and many fans would agree that she’s the reason for her family’s turbulent history throughout the show. Yet, on the other hand, Turner would say that it was her role as the eldest Stark daughter that caused problems in her real life instead.
While on Dr. Phil’s podcast, Turner reveals that she faced depression.“It’s weird. I say I wasn’t very depressed when I was younger, but I used to think about suicide a lot when I was younger. I don’t know why though,” she said. “Maybe it’s just a weird fascination I used to have, but yeah, I used to think about it. I don’t think I ever would have gone through with it. I don’t know.”
It wasn’t until she hit puberty that her symptoms of depression grew stronger. According to Page Six, her depression lasted for about five or six years. It was during that time Turner says she faced a lot of criticism from audiences. Social media trolls would comment negatively on her acting and blame her for ruining the Stark family. She dealt with all of this while dealing with weight gain– something she admits she struggled with once she hit puberty.
However, after seeking therapy, she’s on her way to improving her mental health. Not to mention, it probably helps that she’s engaged to Joe Jonas, who she credits for being very supportive.
The final episode of GOT airs May 19.
