I hate sounding like a broken record. Not even hating when I say that drill music is starting to get played out and over-saturated. Maybe it’s because I am from the south, but I just don’t get the hype behind it. Now that’s not to say I have never enjoyed a drill song because that would be a lie. But when it comes to the actual longevity, I can’t wait to be able to say “I told you so”.
But if someone were to ask me what drill artist I like the most, my answer would be Shawny BinLaden. Believe me, when I say, this guy is single-handedly carrying NY Drill. Coming from Queens, the thing that sets him apart from the pack is how he’s one of the few ones like Cash Cobain that sound noticeably different. If I had to describe his style, it consists of him magically flowing over some random sample.
That’s pretty much his go-to formula, and he executed it perfectly on his single, “Grinchset Shyt”. This track was one of the lead singles off his album, “Wick the Wizard”. I immediately recognized the sample that was used for this song, as it is from the iconic film “Hackers”. When speaking of the production, the 808s might catch you off guard for how amazing they sound.
”Purple Room” Collab
After you listen to this song, you will see what I mean when I say he can’t make a bad song. Recently Shawny teamed up with “The Purple Room” platform for a live performance. It was so dope to see him bring those lyrics to life. Shawny really gets to show why he is the king of this sample shit.
When I say he’s the only NY drill artist that is worth listening to, I truly mean it. Through artistic innovation, he’s keeping the drill sound fresh. Be sure to follow him on Instagram.
