SAG Awards 2023 Moments and Nominees

The SAG Awards is awards show focusing on actors’ film and television performances. It’s also one of the few major pre-Oscar events still being broadcast live. Sunday’s ceremony was streamed live on Netflix’s YouTube channel. That move marks a change from years past when the SAG Awards aired on TNT and TBS before settling on Netflix as their broadcast home beginning in 2024.

    SAG Awards 2023

This year’s SAG Awards did what it was always supposed to do: award the best actors and actresses in their fields. And it did it with an eye towards next month’s Oscars, too.

Fun fact the event is a big indicator of which movies and TV shows might be favored for Oscars nominations. And this year, it was an especially good signal for Ozark, Better Call Saul, Barry, and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

It was also a chance to see the stars out and about in their unique styles, as the red carpet was filled with outfits that ranged from classic to curious to daring and just plain begging for a hashtag. We’ll bring you the best looks from the night as we go, so check back in throughout the evening and keep refreshing/reloading this live blog for all the latest updates.

    SAG Award Winners

We start with the big drama actor race. Jessica Chastain shocked the audience by upsetting Emmy winner Amanda Seyfried for her role on Showtime’s George and Tammy. Then, Sam Elliott won the best-limited series actor for Paramount+’s 1883.

Jason Bateman won his third SAG Award for his role on Ozark. He also got some love from fellow nominees, including Laura Linney, Julia Garner, and the rest of the cast from the final season.

During her acceptance speech, Jamie Lee Curtis rubbed elbows with her Everything Everywhere All at Once costar Michelle Yeoh. The pair sparked a moment with their adorable kiss, and the star even paid tribute to her costar’s mom, who passed away this week.

Jean Smart won her second SAG Award for HBO Max’s Hacks, and Jeremy Allen White was named Male Actor in a TV Movie or Limited Series for FX’s The Bear. The show was also nominated for the best TV Stunt Ensemble.

    Reunions and More

We were also treated to some spirited reunions. Abbott Elementary’s Lisa Ann Walter reconnected with Parent Trap co-star Elaine Hendrix. Meanwhile Parks and Recreation’s Amy Poehler and Aubrey Plaza walked the red carpet together.

There were also plenty of winners who didn’t make the cut for their categories, proving that the SAG Awards don’t just focus on what they do. Those who didn’t win their categories were awarded special prizes for their contributions to the entertainment industry, including Sally Field’s Life Achievement Award and Andrew Garfield’s Aunt May trophy.
