The Proud Boys and other Trump supporters held a pro-MAGA rally in Washington, D.C. They descended over the weekend of 12 – 13 December, 2020 – and mayhem ensued. Clashes with the liberal group Defend D.C. lead to multiple stabbing attacks and arrests. One person was also shot, and several historically Black churches were vandalized during the protests.
“This weekend, we saw forces of hate seeking to use destruction and intimidation to tear us apart,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said to Politico. In a statement, the Rev. Dr. Ianther M. Mills of Asbury Church said “It pained me especially to see our name, Asbury, in flames…For me it was reminiscent of cross burnings. Seeing this act on video made me both indignant and determined to fight the evil that has reared its ugly head.” The Washington National Cathedral’s Dean Randy Hollerith and Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde posted a statement of solidarity. “We reject the version of Christianity that seeks to provide a mantle of spiritual authority to the poison of White nationalism. Religious leaders who bless these rallies, or lend their voice to the effort to subvert democracy, make a mockery of our faith.”
DC police are currently investigating the vandalizations
