Pass The Remote, Cinderelly! A Cinderella Story Becomes Miniseries

Limited Series Cinderella to Grace TV

With J. Lo signed on to executive produce, the new Skydance Television and Concord Originals limited series of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s A Cinderella Story seems bound for success. Rachel Shukert, writer of popular Netflix series GLOW, is executive producing alongside Ms. Lopez as well as being slated as the showrunner for A Cinderella Story in 2022.

    Made For TV

According to Deadline, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella was originally written for television. Julie Andrews won an Emmy for her performance in the titular role. This was back in 1957. In 1965, Lesley Ann Warren’s A Cinderella Story graced television screens in the musical’s first remake. Nothing against those two legends, but there is only one made-for-TV Cinderella remake that actually matters. Starring Brandy as Cinderella and the one and only Whitney Houston as the Fairy Godmother, the 1997 remake is truly the creme de la creme of movie musicals.

Clearly, Brandy and Whitney were all-star enough. The rest of the cast; however, helps make that version stay classic. Broadway legends Bernadette Peters and Victor Garber played the Stepmother and the King, respectively. Jason Alexander, aka Seinfeld’s George Costanza, played Lionel. And the woman who played the queen needs no introduction: Whoopi Goldberg.

Will J. Lo and Shukert’s miniseries live up to the legacy? Will this musical ever have a cast as star-studded again?

    Broadway’s Cinderella

Rodgers and Hammerstein created another Cinderella story, which finally made it to Broadway in 2013 starring Laura Osnes. After Broadway sweetheart Osnes departed the show, it appears stunt casting had to follow. “Call Me Maybe” singer Carly Rae Jepsen stepped into the role alongside TV’s favorite nanny, Fran Drescher, as the Stepmother. Evidently, the 2013 Broadway production was not nearly as diverse as the 1997 movie. In fact, it wasn’t until a year and a half into the show’s run in 2014 that Keke Palmer became the first Black Cinderella on Broadway. One can hope that the new limited series will feature a cast as diverse as the 1997 remake.
