Oprah Winfrey has lost her mother. Vernita Lee died on Thanksgiving day, at the age of 83-years-old. Oprahs’s family confirmed the news, after Oprah’s niece, Alisha Hayes, leaked the news of the passing first.
Winfrey has been known to have had a tumultuous past with her family. Growing up, Winfrey was raised by her grandmother, until she moved to be with Lee in Milwaukee, where Lee was working as a housemaid. A young Winfrey soon had to move from under the care of her mother, following the molestation and abuse from her cousin and uncle.
The two later rekindled their relationship in 1990. Oprah moved her mother in a condo, where Lee received a generous monthly allowance.
Vernita Lee is survived by her two daughters, and a crew of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A private funeral service has already been held.
