Nicki Minaj Makes A Solid Point About Miley Cyrus Embracing Black Culture

I think it is great when someone embraces any culture in the world, but at the same time there comes responsibilities with that.

Perfect example: Nicki Minaj’s issue with Miley Cyrus and you know what…she has a right to be upset.

In a recent interview with the New York Times Magazine, Nicki Minaj went deeper into why she was displeased with Miley Cyrus’ comment.

“The fact that you feel upset about me speaking on something that affects black women makes me feel like you have some big balls,” Minaj said. “You’re in videos with black men, and you’re bringing out black women on your stages, but you don’t want to know how black women feel about something that’s so important? Come on, you can’t want the good without the bad. If you want to enjoy our culture and our lifestyle, bond with us, dance with us, have fun with us, twerk with us, rap with us, then you should also want to know what affects us, what is bothering us, what we feel is unfair to us. You shouldn’t not want to know that.”

Although I don’t agree with how she reacted on the VMAs, she does have a solid point. When embracing any culture, even within the United States, you must understand the culture’s history, any culture issues and even customs.

For example, let’s say you go to Istanbul and take part in Muslim practices. You wouldn’t embrace it, read the Quran, but then walk into a mosque with your shoes on, which is a no no.

Now, I’m not saying Miley can’t have her own opinion, but, I also don’t think it’s right to tell someone that they have no right to express their feelings and own individual experience after getting involved in that person’s culture.

Sometimes you have to step back, evaluate why that individual feels a certain way and express your thoughts but in a way that doesn’t necessarily downcasts the other person’s thoughts.

Collectively, I think this issue could’ve been handled better on Miley and Nicki Minaj’s part because, this could’ve been a great push for a discussion about culture exchange and cultural appropriation.

There’s still hope for an open discussion.
