When Will It Stop
On January 1st, 2020, the former lover of the late Bobby Kristina Brown, Nick Gordon was found dead at 30 years old. Although there is no confirmed cause of death at the moment, it is highly speculated that his passing was drug-related. Both the Brown and Houston families have been known for battling substance abuse. Whitney Houston’s passing in 2012 and her daughter Bobby’s overdose in 2015 and now Gordon’s death this week. It’ clear this tragedy is not only impacting these families but our music culture as well.
The World On Drugs
Hip-Hop and R&B culture has never been one to shy away from drug usage. But where do we as people draw the line and address the fact that this is a systematic problem?
The recent passing of Juice WRLD is just one of many drug-related deaths in the past few years. Names Such as Mac Miller, Lil Peep, Speaker Knockerz, Fredo Santana, and Asap Yams are some others in recent history who have fallen victim to substance abuse. The industrialization of opioids and the easy accessibility to these drugs has created a generation of musicians hooked on drugs. Whether it is to numb the pain artists feel inside or to help inspire creativity, it has gotten out of control.
