The country’s all-male historically black college is implementing a new policy that will allow for transgender men to attend the school.
The new policy is scheduled to go into effect in fall 2020. Morehouse follows behind its neighboring college, Spelman University, which introduced a similar policy in 2017. However, Morehouse is going on record as the only all-male college in the nation to adopt a policy of this type.
“In a rapidly changing world that includes a better understanding of gender identity, we’re proud to expand our admissions policy to consider trans men who want to be part of an institution that has produced some of the greatest leaders in social justice, politics, business, and the arts for more than 150 years,” said Terrance Dixon, Morehouse’s enrollment vice president.
There’s one other thing that new students and returning students should know. School officials state that the new policy does not protect students who transition to female. They will have to meet with the school president to discuss their options.
