Migrant Children Being Detained Will Be Released Before Christmas

If it weren’t for the Trump administration messing up background checks, hundreds of migrant children wouldn’t be able to go home for Christmas this year.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement established a new policy that required the fingerprints of everyone in a household before a migrant child could be released into a sponsor’s custody. The Trump administration has now admitted that the background checks were unnecessary.

Because of the additional checks, many children were detained for much longer periods of time. Now, nearly 2,000 children can expect to be released soon.

The Department of Health and Human Services, claims the need for the extra background checks was to ensure the safety of each child. But the plan backfired. As a result, the number of children detained had doubled. Not to mention, it had caused panic within households. ICE had arrested 170 undocumented immigrants who submitted fingerprints.

On Tuesday, there were a reported 14,600 kids in HHS facilities. An alarming number, which HHS is not able to keep up with, considering limited space, and inadequate staffing.

Thank God they can now go home before Christmas!

But for the sake of the world, what should be done to avoid shit like this?
