Michigan State’s Kenneth Walker III Carries The Spartans To Victory, 37-33

Michigan State’s Kenneth Walker III carries the Spartans to a victory over the Michigan Wolverines, 37-33. Walker had a legendary night, running for 193 yards and five touchdowns on the road.

This was his second outing with four or more rushing touchdowns this season, per ESPN. He’s the top rusher among all college running backs, and he’s only the third player from the Spartans to score five rushing touchdowns in a single game.

Prior to this game, Walker was second in the country in total rush yards and has been mentioned in discussions for Heisman consideration. This performance cemented his nomination and consideration for the Heisman even further.

“Overall, I don’t feel like it’s a Heisman moment, but I feel like it was just a great team win,” he said after the game.

The Spartans had their back against the wall for the majority of this game. They even trailed the Wolverines 23-14 at halftime. There were points throughout this game where the Spartans couldn’t convert on third down for a whole quarter. However, they were able to get the ball rolling and converted three straight which ultimately led to one of Walker’s touchdowns.

Michigan State Spartans off to Slow Start

Michigan State Spartans quarterback Payton Thorne struggled early in the first quarter. He threw two interceptions and only recorded 116 yards through the air in the first half, per ESPN. He managed to stay calm and didn’t allow his shortcomings to affect the outcome of this game. Thorne also felt confident understanding Walker was in his backfield and knowing how good of a play maker he truly is.

“I will say, three of his touchdowns today, I wasn’t expecting a huge play,” Thorne said. “On the first one, we were in the huddle, and I said let’s just forget the red zone, let’s just score right here and he did, so that was good. The other one was not a home run play, but as you see with him, any play could be a home run. The o-line was doing a good job, I’m sure he’ll give them credit.”

Let it be known that Michigan led the game at one point, 30-14. The loss was as astonishing to the Wolverines as it was to the nation, especially with the team being in the driver seat for the majority of the game. The Spartans head coach Mel Tucker is the first head coach 2-0 against Michigan but won’t clarify the team’s trajectory with the media.

“I don’t believe in self-imposed limitations,” Tucker said. “I’ve said this before publicly, our goal is to win every game on our schedule. … What does success look like? I’ve been asked several times, success is us reaching our full potential as a football team. And so we have not hit our ceiling yet, we still have room for improvement and we have a tough schedule ahead.”

Are fans more excited about the Spartans’ comeback than Spartans players?

Passionate sports fans make the sport more entertaining for the athletes. At times, fans became more excessive and belligerent than many wanted them to be. However, their support and passion for their teams keep this sport alive.

In the latest incidents after the Spartans’ comeback, a few of the students got a bit carried away in their celebration and began destroying property. Nonetheless, one must respect the dedication and effort of these fans to go to this extent over a game. The fans often risk their livelihood and future for a moment in time that they will never forget.
