Michael Jackson’s Music to be Blackballed by Select Radio Stations

rollingstone.com

Due to all the new controversy swarming Michael Jackson, select radio stations are beginning to pull the singer’s music from their playlists.

First to do it are radio stations broadcasting out of New Zealand and in Canada. Although the stations have not specifically classified Jackson as guilty, they claim their decision is based primarily on what their audiences want. New Zealand’s main radio station, RNZ, states that “Playlists change from week to week and right now Michael Jackson does not feature on them.” That is not to say that the icon’s music will never play again, but for now, his music has been retired.

The decision comes after the two-part documentary Leaving Neverland, which shares the story of Wade Robson and James Safechuck. Both Robson and Safechuck claim to have been sexually abused by Jackson, while they were young boys. The documentary has done its part to tarnish the King of Pop’s legacy. However, Dan Reed, the documentary’s director, is happy to have brought the two victim’s stories to light. In his opinion, discontinuing Jackson’s radio time is a proper choice.

“People will have to listen to his music in the knowledge that he was a prolific child rapist. If they’re comfortable doing that, fine. If they’re not, well perhaps listen to something else for a while.”

As all of this happens, MJ is, of course, not able to tell his version of the story. He’s been dead for nearly a decade.
