In 2022, rap’s most talented young stars shared statement albums that prove rap’s artistry is still strong. From Smino’s Luv 4 Rent to Mavi’s Laughing So Hard, It Hurts and IDK’s Simple, these songs represent some of the genre’s best work in years.

Billy Woods’ 2022 release Aethiopes, featuring Preservation and Alchemist, combines shape-shifting lyricism with varied and far-reaching sample curation to create a lush cinematic feel. The result is an album that delves into a world of loss and the conclusions reached from them.

Metro Boomin is one of the best producers in the game and his sophomore LP Heroes & Villains proves that once again. This time around, he paired up some of the game’s biggest artists to round out this super cohesive record.

It also had a very cinematic feel, with Morgan Freeman narrating the tracks and song transitions that pulled you into the story. It was a really strong album and definitely one of the top releases in 2018.

J.I.D’s third studio album The Forever Story is one of the best releases of 2022, with appearances from Lil Wayne, 21 Savage, Lil Durk and Ari Lennox. Debuting at an impressive number 12 on the Billboard 200, this album is a definite must-listen. Danger Mouse & Black Thought have joined forces for their inaugural collaborative effort, Cheat Codes, showcasing an exceptional lineup of featured collaborators.

The album will be produced by Metro Boomin

Metro Boomin is one of rap’s premier facilitators, and he has shaped so many of the genre’s most popular hits. From Drake and Future’s “Jumpman” to Migos’ “Bad and Boujee” to The Weeknd’s “Heartless,” Metro has made a name for himself as an artist and producer who can push the boundaries of trap while staying true to his signature sound.

His sophomore album, Heroes & Villains, further entrenches his status as an essential pillar of the rap genre and demonstrates that world-building is possible with trap. He and his collaborators make this a reality by creating a cohesive, coherent, and engaging project, but it falls short of reaching the individual qualitative peaks that Metro’s first solo effort achieved.

The project will feature 21 Savage

Metro Boomin has been riding high off of his second No. 1 album Heroes & Villains, and reports have surfaced that he’s planning a new project with frequent collaborator Future.

The Atlanta-based super producer also recently revealed plans for a joint album with Dreamville’s J.I.D., which will be the first joint effort of the duo since their last album The Forever Story. It’s expected to drop this year, though no official release date has been announced yet.

As far as feature choices go, 21 Savage has become a staple of rapper-producer albums, with many of his collaborations having massive consumption numbers in 2021 and beyond (including the hit record “Knife Talk” featuring Drake and Project Pat).

The Baltimore-born artist has a long history of rapping alongside other artists, including J. Cole on “My Life” and Travis Scott on “Outside,” which are both a testament to their synergy as MCs and producers. They’ve made songs that have lit up the radio and become anthems for a variety of genres.
