The Grammy winner singer-songwriter has been using his social media for the last 10 days to speak out about the Black Lives Matter movement. Justin Bieber’s career has been boosted by having different music collaborations with a lot of the artists being people of color.
What does Justin Say About The Issue
Since the murder of George Floyd, Justin has been posting regularly. His posts honor some of his mentors/ collaborators that are people of color. Some of his posts from the last following weeks are resources for the Black Lives Matter movement (e.g.petitions).
On Sunday, Justin spoke out on his Instagram about what black culture means to him
“I am inspired by black culture. I have benefited from black culture.”
“My style, how I sing, dance, perform, and my fashion have all been influenced and inspired by black culture.”
“I am committed to using my platform from this day forward to learn, to speak up about racial injustice and systemic oppression, and to identify ways to be a part of much needed change.”
There has been a mixed reaction to Justin’s recent posts, some have been negative and some positive. Mainly his fans think that he’s words and posts are having a positive impact on the Black Lives Matter movement. This is due to his big presents in the media, and his big influence on young adults and teens.
The negative reactions have been based on Justin’s past, his words he used were the opposite of his present viewpoints. In 2014, footage surfaced of Justin making a racist joke and using the n-word. He did apologize for the incident saying “ “I apologize for offending or hurting anyone with my childish and inexcusable mistaken”.
Other Celebrities Following Justin’s Lead
With Justin’s frequent use of social media to defend and support the Black Lives Matter movement, other celebrities are following his lead.
Jennifer Aniston used her platform to bring awareness to the movement and donated $1 million for the cause.
Cole Sprouse went to protest for the cause and used his platform to speak out about his experience.
