Philadelphia, PA — The last time UFC fans saw Jon Jones fight in the octagon was July 29, 2017, against reigning UFC Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier. The highly talented Jones would walk away winning the fight. However, the decision would not stand for long.
The magnificent fighter was at the top of the world, but then a failed test came into play. Therefore, it was no surprise stripping him of the title due to Anti-Doping Policy violation. The violation stemmed from an in-competition sample. Sampling was collected after Jones’ weigh-in on took place on July 28, 2017. Many were shocked by the fight ruling as a ‘no contest‘ by the California Athletic State Commission. Because of this ruling, Daniel Cormier was reinstated as the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Jon clearly has a history of a failed drug test. Which includes one taking place in November 2016, which resulted in a one-year suspension.
Stripping Jones of his title is something that has become common. In April 2015, tragic new came about involving Jones in a hit-and-run. Furthermore, Jon would face the consequence by stripping him on his title. Previously Jones and Gustafsson faced off in an ultra-competitive contest at UFC 165. Gustafsson skillset convincingly took Jones to a deciding 5th round. The fight ultimately ended in a unanimous decision in favor of Jones. ” I know the next time we fight, I’ll know exactly what to do to beat him.” , said Gustafsson in a documentary aired by the UFC.
According to mmafighting.com, on December 23rd, the Nevada Athletic Commission ruled that they will not license Jones to fight in Nevada. Above all, the decision came after what they ruled an abnormal drug test from Jones. The fight will take place in California tonight for the main event. In other words, Dana White and the UFC dodged a bullet.
Back in October, the UFC ruled that Daniel Cormier will relinquish the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Instantly making this contest tonight a UFC Light Heavyweight Championship rematch. The showdown for Cormier Vs. Lewis is where Cormier gained a big win by submission at UFC 230. Based on the story-line of Jones return, and based on the history between these two fighters for the Light Heavyweight Championship, this fight will be a must watch for UFC fans on tonight.
Furthermore, his previous discovered usage led to a three-year road of suspension from the UFC. This fight will be Jones clean slate and prove his dominance. In conclusion, Jon’s focus is to gain back his reputation as the best fighter in the UFC. On the other hand, Alexander Gustafsson’s will be fighting to avenge his UFC 165 loss.
