Joey Trap’s EP “Champ” Set for Release
A true creative who raps, produces, and directs his music videos, San Diego-via-Spanish Harlem artist Joey Trap is one of rap’s secret rising stars. Today, the 21-year-old artist announces the upcoming CHAMP EP, his third project of 2020. Spanning 11-tracks, the new tape showcases Joey’s diverse taste in production–he likes echoing 808s, plinking percussion, and earworm-y guitar lines.
Joey artfully mixes boasts and biography, reflecting on how his past struggles inform his desire for stardom: “F*ck it I do my thing/VVS bless my chain/I did this on my own, so if I lose myself to blame,” he rhymes on “Right Now.” The follow-up to January’s pastoral Wild West and February’s hyper-aggressive STFU, CHAMP EP releases on March 27th via Young Rich Squad/PIVTL Projects.
What to Expect
“I was born in New York, and always had to learn to do things myself, learning how to take small wins here and there, and put them towards my goal of a bigger win,” says Joey Trap. “My mom is a champ, she raised me, she looked after me. My brother’s a champ. My friends. Everyone in my life is a champ, in my opinion. Everyone deserves to feel like a winner and should feel that way in their heart. Everyone loses now and then. But you’ve gotta pick people up and let them know ‘You’re good champ'”
Along with the EP announcement, Joey shares a behind-the-scenes featurette about the video for his upcoming “I DO” single, a skeletal trap bop with tuneful percussion and syncopated 808s. The new BTS feature offers an inside look at the wedding-set video, complete with interviews with Joey about the new song and clip. Take a look for a sneak peek at the CHAMP EP and to get an inside glimpse of Joey’s wild world.
With over 225k followers on Instagram and 1.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Joey Trap is carving his own path through the industry and picking up an army of loyal fans in the process. Already one of the most prolific rappers in the game, Joey is devoted to satisfying his fans, bending his styles to fit the tastes of rap fans of all stripes.
In January, Joey shared the Wild West project, featuring an appearance from Mikey100k, a concept record with songs like “Purse” (featured on Spotify’s Clout Culture playlist and with over 960k streams on Spotify), “John Wayne” (over 1 million streams on Spotify) and “Arrival” (745k Spotify streams).”
His most recent EP, STFU, has a punk rock energy and a sound purpose-built for mosh pits, featuring an appearance from Joey’s frequent collaborator and recent tourmate TOKYO’S REVENGE and hosts the buzzing single “JOHN CENA.” With his third project of the year on the way, Joey looks to level up, making 2020 his breakout year.
