After a guest song on DJ Khaled’s “Major Key” album dropped yesterday, rapper J. Cole has left fans concerned. On “Jermaine’s Interlude,” the fifth track on the album, Cole claims that he has thought about leaving the hip hop game.
“How the f— do I look when I brag to you about some diamond? / Said all that I could say, now I play with thoughts of retirement,” the North Carolina native rapped at the end of his verse.
The admission comes 18 months after Cole released “2014 Forest Hills Drive,” an album that went double-platinum and cemented his presence atop hip hop. Cole’s discography isn’t particularly expansive: with three mixtapes and three albums, one would expect more music coming from the rapper in the future.
The “Jermaine’s Interlude” line doesn’t mean J. Cole is completely done, though. In an accidental on-air acknowledgment, BBC Radio’s DJ Semtex slipped up and said that Cole has a new album coming out. The host quickly cut himself off.
After the quality of “2014 Forest Hills Drive,” more new music from the top-notch rapper would be appreciated. Hopefully, retirement isn’t coming too soon.
