Good things come in threes. Maryland rapper IDK (formerly known as Jay IDK), has released the final tracks off his album, IWASVERYBAD: The Story of Jason Mills. The soundtrack is an ambitious, three-part release produced in collaboration with Adult Swim.
In an age where it often feels impossible for emerging, independent artists to distinguish themselves from the pack, the 25-year-old rapper, née Jason Mills, continues to think outside of the box to capture our ears.
Back in April, IDK announced his partnership with Adult Swim, the adult-oriented cartoon programming block, to produce visual content to accompany the release of his new album.
From September 29 to October 13 all of the tracks were released as “episodes,”—a nod to the collaboration, but also to the pithy lyrical content—each song tackling a stage in the rapper’s life from his troubles in school, to a bid in jail, and the untimely passing of his mother.
Though standouts thus far have included bass thumpers “Maryland Ass N*gga,” featuring Swizz Beat, and “Pizza Shop” featuring Yung Gleesh, MF Doom, and Del The Funky Homosapien, listeners will be surprised to be just as entranced by the more vulnerable records like “No Shoes On the Rug, Leave Them At the Door” and “Black Sheep, White Dove,” which delve further into his complicated relationship with his mother.
