Harvey Weinstein sentenced to 23 years in prison for his convictions in Rape Case.
A Judge in New York City sentenced disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein to 23 years of prison time Wednesday. Weinstein was facing up to 29 years of prison time, so he got a break of some sort.
Arriving at sentencing in a Wheelchair and handcuffs, the former movie executive was hoping for some leniency. Earlier in the week, Weinstein’s lawyer was seeking a five years sentence citing his age and health as the reason for the request. The Lawyers tried arguing that anything more than five years was “basically a death sentence” as they feel their client is “a broken man.”
Weinstein has been in custody since being convicted and has had several health issues since. Doctors inserted a stent into one of his heart valves just last week. Following that, he fell while recovering at rickers island.
Judge James Burke didn’t seem to take much of that into consideration during sentencing.
Before the sentence was announced, victims got a chance to share how the incidents had affected their lives. Both Miriam Hailey and Jessica Mann got an opportunity to speak during the sentencing hearing. Hailey asked the judge to consider a sentence “long enough for Harvey Weinstein to acknowledge what he has done.”
Mann asked for the maximum sentence during her victim impact speech. She even referenced how cocaine charges carry longer penalties than third-degree rape.
“How am I not worth more than cocaine?” Stated Mann.
Harvey Weinstein will likely spend the rest of his life in prison after being sentenced today. In addition to the conviction he received in New York. Weinstein still faces similar charges in Los Angelas for which he is yet to turn himself in to face.
It has taken some time, but the results of the #Metoo movement are finally getting to the point that some women can feel like justice has been served. The facts remain they will have to live with the trauma of their experiences. However at least a few of them know that the predators who harmed them will never get to hurt anyone else.
What do you guys think about Harvey Weinstein being sentenced to 23 years? Should he have gotten the life sentence instead? Or should he have gotten less time because of his age and health conditions?
