Former NFL running back Lawrence Phillips has been charged with the first-degree murder of his cellmate at the Kern Valley State Prison.
Phillips is already serving a 31-year sentence for vehicle theft, spousal abuse and assault with a deadly weapon more specifically he was convicted of choking his girlfriend and later of driving his car into three teens after a playground football game. Damon Soward was allegedly strangled to death by Phillips in the cell they shared.
Phillips was drafted 6th overall in the 1996 draft by the Rams after having a tumultuous career at the University of Nebraska – he also spent time playing for the Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers during his three-year NFL career.
Now 40, Phillips if sentenced could receive a punishment of life in prison.
