We caught up with Elijah Hill, 1/3rd of the dynamic event agency – Levels. In this exclusive interview, hypefresh learns more about the history behind the emerging brand, and their future goals upcoming.
How was Levels Agency started and how did it get to be as successful as it is today?
Levels Agency started with 3 friends who are the CEO’s: Duane Davis, Elijah Hill, & Elisha Hill. We all attended Slippery Rock University, & went to the events and parties held up at college while in school first. The parties we attended had potential to be huge, but it seemed nobody who performed could ever reach its full potential. So one day we were contemplating on having our own party. We were unsure if anybody would show up, but decided to have it anyway. We didn’t do anything to make money from it, we were just doing it because we wanted to give everybody a party which was fun.
On October 12th, 2013 we held our first party called “Pre-Homecoming Party” up at Slippery Rock University. We only expected maybe 50-80 people to be there which is normal for a college party. We got a surprise, when carloads of people started to pull up. They were 10 cars deep each time. We exceeded our expectations and got a turn out of 5,000 people. The clubhouse where the party was being held at, was way too small and only could accommodate 250 People, so we were forced to move the party outside and turned it into a block party.
At the end of the night we went back to our dorm room astonished and shocked not knowing how that many people showed up. At that point in time, we asked each other. “Do we really think we could do this?“. A couple days later, the people gave us our answer. They wanted another event, they wanted another party & they wanted it soon. So we all sat down and it took us a week to come up with an identity for ourselves. We first called ourselves Levels Promotions, but then we realized we were in school for business – so we didn’t want to limit ourselves. We changed it to Levels Agency. A lot of people didn’t understand what our purpose was & neither did we. It was a venture we were willing to take. Throughout the process of planning our second event and reaching out to every venue in Pittsburgh, nobody gave us a chance. None of the venues would allow us to have a party (which is understandable) because we were 18 year old African-American college students… and they were protecting their business not knowing we were professional.
One day we got a call from Changes Night Club in New Castle, PA which is 1 hour outside of Pittsburgh. We were scared at first because not many people had transportation and the drive was far to get to the venue. But it was our only opportunity we had. We had already started promoting the event which was called “Project 412”. If your from Pittsburgh you know the area code is “412”, but the area we were having the party at has an area code of “724”. A lot of people we’re laughing at that fact, but we just ignored it and had the party anyway. We also had a $1,000.00 give away to one lucky person in the venue that night. The event, was from 10-2. The day of the event nobody was there at 10:30-10:45 and we got nervous and scared thinking nobody was going to show up. Next thing we know, bus loads of people started to pour in by the hundreds. Then the event got crazy, we maxed out capacity of the venue which holds 3,000 people. 3,000 people drove 1 hour away from the city to come to our event on August 9th, 2014. That’s when we officially became Levels Agency ! That is the day we set our mark in the city.
