Ellen DeGeneres Defends George W. Bush Friendship After Cowboys Game Backlash

Ellen DeGeneres will stand up for her friends!

Ellen DeGeneres created controversy when she was spotted laughing with President George W. Bush at the Cowboys-Packers game over the weekend. DeGeneres faced a flurry of tweets that questioned her — a gay, liberal woman in Hollywood — for sitting with a Republican former president. On Tuesday, DeGeneres explained the situation and defended her friendship with the 73-year-old politician.

DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, were invited to the game by Charlotte Jones. Which is the daughter of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

“We wanted to keep up with the Joneses,” she quipped during her monologue on Tuesday’s episode of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

“When we were invited, I was aware that I was going be surrounded with people from very different views and beliefs…”

“…and I’m not talking about politics; I was rooting for the Packers,” she explained, “and get this — everybody in the Cowboys suite was rooting for the Cowboys…”

“…so I had to hide my cheese hat in Portia’s purse.”

When the camera showed that DeGeneres was sitting next to Bush, the tweets came in.

“They thought why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president,” she said,

“but a lot of people were mad.”

However, there was one tweet that gave DeGeneres hope: “‘Ellen and George Bush together makes me have faith in America again.’”

The comedian defended her friendship with Bush and urged others to spend time with people with different views.

“I’m friends with George Bush. In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have,” she said. “We’re all different and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s OK that we’re all different. For instance, I wish people wouldn’t wear fur. I don’t like it but I’m friends with people who wear fur.

“But just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean I’m not going to be friends with them,” she continued.

“When I say be kind to one another, I don’t mean only the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone.”
