Welsh singer-songwriter, Duffy, has been absent from the spotlight for nearly ten years. Her last studio album, “Endlessly”, was the last the world had heard from her until now.
Duffy took to Instagram yesterday to share some devastating news. She says that she left the spotlight for a decade long recovery.
“Many of you wonder what happened to me, where did I disappear to and why,” she wrote. She told her followers that a journalist reached out to her this past summer. “He was kind, and it felt so amazing to finally speak,” she said.
Sadly, Duffy went on to explain that she had been “drugged, raped, and held captive for several days,” and needed time to heal. The disturbing news came as a shock to everyone.
The post has nearly 16,000 comments giving the singer endless support.
“Of course I survived. The recovery took time. There’s no light way to say it,” she said in the post. “But I can tell you in the last decade, the thousands and thousands of days I committed to wanting to feel the sunshine in my heart again, the sun does now shine.”
Furthermore, Duffy, whose birth name is Aimee Anne Duffy, ensured fans that she is safe now. She explained her withdrawal from the music industry, saying, “You wonder why I did not choose to use my voice to express my pain? I did not want to show the world the sadness in my eyes.”
“I asked myself, how can I sing from the heart if it is broken,” she continued. In 2009 she won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album for her album Rockferry.
Additionally, she asked her fans to “Please respect this is a gentle move for me to make for myself.”
“I do not want any intrusion to my family,” she concluded.
Therefore, Duffy revealed no answers to her fans. She had not said when the incident happened or who her attacker was. The Guardian reports that she’s expected to give answers to those questions in a sit-down interview soon.
