Maurice Robinson, the driver of the truck that contained 39 dead bodies has been officially charged. Robinson was driving a refrigerated truck that was stoped in southeastern England. After police arrested another Northern Ireland man at Dublin airport, they were led to the truck.
Robinson is now facing charges of manslaughter, conspiracy to traffic people. As well as conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and money laundering. Additionally, three other people were arrested in connection with the deaths but were released.
Firstly, investigators believed that the victims were Chinese. However many Vietnamese families have come forward expressing concerns for their loved ones. For example, the family of Vietnam born 26-year old Pham Thi Tra My received a message that said her trip to the UK didn’t go well.
Allegedly some of the victims paid thousands of dollars to get to the UK for opportunities.
Even more, this truck is suspected to be one of three that contained at least 100 people. No word on if authorities have been able to locate the other trucks.
Since the news broke about the 39 bodies many people have expressed their condolences including the prime minister.
In the book condolences, prime minster johnson wrote. “The whole nation, and indeed the world had been shocked by this tragedy and the cruelty of the fate that has been suffered by innocent people who were hoping for a better life in this country.
The families of the 31 men and 8 women will have to wait sometime for the closure. As the police department has quite a task on hand to get DNA evidence back on everyone involved.
What do you guys think though? Should Robinson be charged with murder? Or is Manslaughter good enough?
