Now, Disney will release their movies exclusively in theaters with no same day premiere access.

As the changes went live for its latest film, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 rings, Disney’s media Chairman, Kareem Daniel made the following statement.

“As confidence in moviegoing continues to improve, we look forward to entertaining audiences in theaters, while maintaining the flexibility to give our Disney+ subscribers the gift of Encanto this holiday season,”

6 Movies Effected By Disney’s Exclusively in Theaters Plan

Of those movies, Disney has coming to theaters: Encanto, Eternals, West Side Story remake, The Last Duel, The King’s Man, and Ron’s Gone Wrong. It seems out of the bunch maybe Encanto,  Eternals, and maybe West Side Story will draw the bigger crowds while the rest would have been victims of piracy. So, maybe Disney is making a wise decision. So, their plan is as follows: movies will remain exclusively for 45 days in theaters before hitting their streaming platform. This way, they can maximize theater numbers in their respective openings.

    1. Marvel’s Eternals

    Scarlett Johansson Lawsuit against Disney

However, piracy wasn’t the only reason for this decision. Apparently, they made a sneaky unethical decision to do same day premieres with Black Widow withholding those profits from the actors involved. In doing so, It allowed Disney to pocket earnings without fairly distributing them across all involved.  As a result, Scarlett Johansson spoke out against Disney and filed a suit against against the media company. Currently, Scarlett Johansson is executing a lawsuit against the company costing Disney lots of money in legal fees. Most likely, the company will settle out of court. But, it definitely  has impacted the way they approach their films releases moving forward.

Disney Plus Subscribers and fans Effected by Changes

With all this changing it will force movie goers to watch in theaters or wait the resounding 45 days until it is released on the streaming platform. While, many have enjoyed this flexibility and convience, it will no longer be available. This will impact those who have special needs or large families trying to forgo theaters filled to capacity. With the pandemic still surging, those being careful will now have to wait for their favorite films or risk exposure to the variant strains. All in all, while this is set at the moment, changes will probably happen again if money begins to dry up for Disney, yet again?
