Did The New England Patriots Win The Trade?

The Patriots traded QB Jarrett Stidham and a 2023 seventh-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for a 2023 sixth-round pick, as reported by Mike Reiss. Unfortunately, Jarrett Stidham has had a tough time in the NFL. He was once expected to succeed former New England Patriots’ QB Tom Brady. However, he’s proven nothing since his time in the NFL. Stidham was drafted in 2019 from Auburn University. Since 2019, he’s started zero NFL games and had 48 passing attempts, 24 completions, and two touchdowns to four interceptions, according to ESPN. Not to mention, in three seasons he’s played a total of eight games.

While he’s left many fans in limbo simply because they haven’t seen him enough, he’s reuniting with familiar faces at the Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders HC Josh McDaniels has been the Patriots OC for the past three seasons. Stidham will join McDaniels and Raiders star, QB Derek Carr. It seems that he will compete for backup QB with Nick Mullens this offseason to see if he makes the team.

Musical Chairs for the New England Patriots

One must admit that while he’s underachieved as a Patriot, the environment has been a game of musical chairs since he arrived in 2019. In his rookie season, Brady began beefing with the front office and Patriots HC Bill Belichick. Ultimately, this led to the departure of Brady and the signing of veteran QB Cam Newton. Many had high hopes for Newton; however, he let many down as well. In 2020, many believed Stidham would get his opportunity to play and show the world he can produce. While playing lackluster, Newton manages to keep the sport for the entirety of the season. The following season, rookie QB Mac Jones was determined to beat everyone out for the starting job and the Patriots haven’t looked back since.

Stidham remains with one year remaining on his rookie contract. He’s scheduled to earn, $965,000, per ESPN. The New England Patriots have a tight salary cap and shipping Stidham off absolutely helped clear space going forward.

Things are uncertain with Stidham, however, the Raiders receiving a great teammate is. His former teammate and All-Pro safety Devin McCourty spoke extremely high of him on his podcast, “Double Coverage”.

Devin McCourty spoke highly of Stiddy in a March 2020 episode, noting that there were weeks when he performed exceptionally well. Stiddy’s impressive performance during practice pushed the defense to excel, making those weeks memorable. McCourty also praised Stiddy’s strong work ethic and mentioned that he’s a good and mature young man off the field.
