    Clark Atlanta University Plans To Cancel All Student Debt

    In the wake of the novel pandemic, businesses shut down, people remained in doors and even schools suffered. Though, things turned around for the better when the government started sending out stimulus checks to help our nation recover.

    Specifically, historically black colleges received $5 billion dollars from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. Of course, the CARES Act and American Rescue Plan played a large part in helping provide funds. Luckily, Clark Atlanta University was one of the many HBCUs to receive the covid-19 relief funds from the government. Now the school wants to help its students tackle student loan debt.

    Clark Atlanta University Clears Student Loan Debt During Pandemic

    On July 23, 2021,  Clark Atlanta University gave a news press release about their plans to clear student loan debt starting from the spring of 2020 to the summer of 2021. Specifically, the school will eliminate student loan debt from the last five semesters. Additionally, Clark Atlanta University plans to reconfigure all its amenities and on-site housing for students. According to CNN, the HBCU plans to reimburse students for a portion of their spring 2020 housing and meal expenses. Additionally, they will provide 4,000 Dell laptops to financially enrolled students and supply hotspots for those who have limited or no internet access at home. At the time, the school had nearly 4,000 students to appease. Even the president of the University, Dr. George French, congratulated students on their courage during the pandemic.

    All The HBCUs That Have Followed Suit

    Clark Atlanta University certainly stepped up to the plate in helping students pay off their student loan debt. After benefiting from the covid-19 relief funds from the government, other historically black colleges followed suit as well. At the beginning of July, South Carolina State University planned to clear $9.8 million dollars in student loan debt for a fraction of its students. Delaware State University, Shaw University and even Wilberforce University also announced their plans to help pay off student loan debt. Hopefully, more colleges and universities will offer covid-relief plans to their students, even graduates.
