The annual BET Hip Hop Awards 2018 premiered on Oct. 16. Millions of people tune in every year to watch this specialized awards show for the culture, but the most exciting part that many are excited to watch are the cyphers. This year’s cyphers included artists Vic Mensa, G Herbo, Bri Steves, Sharaya J, Nick Grant, Casanova, Shawn Smith, YBN Cordae, Neelam Hakeem and more along with DJ Premiere and Erykah Badu.
Cardi B. took home four awards, the most of any artist last night and only one more than the Carters. Cardi won in the categories: MVP of the Year, Made You Look, Sweet 16: Best Featured Verse and Hustler of the Year. The Carters won Best Album of the Year, Best Collabo, Duo, or Group and Single of the Year.
BET remembered the late Mac Miller and awarded XXXtentacion the Best New Artist award. Lil Wayne accepted the I Am Hip Hop award and gave a speech thanking those who “refused”. He thanked the people that refused give up on him and those who refused to stop supporting him.
Wayne shared a heartfelt story about Uncle Bob who saved him during a life-threatening situation. Uncle Bob saw the rapper’s body laying in a pool of blood on the floor. While first responders walked over him to do other things, Uncle Bob stopped to see if he was okay. He rushed him to the hospital without waiting for an ambulance and refused to leave his side. Lil Wayne’s daughter, Reginae Carter, and his mother stood behind him on stage while he presented his inspiring speech.
Deray Davis, comedian and actor, hosted the awards show last night in Miami Beach, Florida. The most nominations were given to rap star, Drake, with eleven nominations. Following him was rap emcee Cardi B. with ten nominations. There were performances by Cardi B., T.I., Gucci Mane, Young M.A., Lil Pump, Lil Baby, Yella Beezy and Flipp Dinero to name a few.
