Brittney Griner Finally Gets Trial Date, Possibly Faces Ten Years

Russian Premier League team UMMC Ekaterinburg and Phoenix Mercury’s WNBA star Brittney Griner will finally appear in Russian court. Friday July 1, 2022 will be the start of her trial. Wrongfully detained, classified by the U.S. State Department on April 29, Griner remains in jail after 140 days. Russian Officials arrested Griner on drug charges on February 17, at Moscow airport. Authorities claimed to have found vape cartridges with cannabis oils and large amounts of narcotics in her luggage.

    Detailing Brittney Griner’s Trial

Griner’s detention will be extended six months, awaiting trial decision according to Griner’s lawyer, Alexander Boykov. If found guilty Griner could face up to 10 years in prison.

    Squashing Beef with Russia

Griner’s arrest seems to be a direct reflection of the extent Russia is willing to go to express its anger. The world observes its overwhelming influence. Her circumstances are poor with current tensions between Russia and the United States, due to the war in Ukraine and Americas support for Ukraine.

As an African American woman who identifies with the LGBTQ community in a potential hostage situation, she is not receiving the attention she deserves. Brittney Griner’s height currently does not amount to the depth of her ongoing obstacles.

This incident appears to be part of a pattern. Previously Russia arrested other U.S. citizens such as Paul Whelan (detained since 2018).

U.S. officials claim to be doing the best they can to compromise with Russia’s government.  Although there were discussions about prisoner swaps, no actual plans are in the works.

    Rallying Support for Griner

Nonetheless, many people continue to do their part by signing petitions. President Joe Biden received letters requesting actions to help Griner. Numerous WNBA and NBA players publicly speak out about the situation. “We Are BG” printed shirts are worn by players that stand in solidarity with Brittney Griner. The WNBA placed “BG 42” on the courts of all teams to bring awareness and support Griner.

However, today makes the first step in progress to getting Brittney Griner back home safely. And stay tuned as witness make their statements.
