Amazing! South African Musician Plays Guitar During Brain Surgery

Just when I thought I’ve seen everything…Musa Manzini stole the show.

Coming out of Cape Town, South Africa is a video of Musa Manzini, a local musician, playing the guitar while doctors removed a tumor from his brain. HIS BRAIN!!! Yeah…it ain’t like he played “Stairway to Heaven.” But just the act of him doing anything while this is going on is still impressive. Much less brain surgery. And to top it off, the surgery ended up being a success.

According to Dr. Rohen Harrichandparsad, one of the neurosurgeons on the team, the guitar-playing helped the doctors with the operation while avoiding the injury of neural pathways:

“It increased the margin of safety for us, in that we could have real-time feedback on what we were doing intraoperatively.”

The Star reports that the jazz musician was given a local anesthetic and was operated in what’s called an “awake craniotomy”.  Despite the WTF factor, the procedure’s not that uncommon. The idea of him playing an instrument was to test Manzini’s brain’s ability to produce sound. This is so that he doesn’t leave the table a useless, no-guitar-playing vegetable. The advances in science are just absolutely incredible…

What do you think? Could you play guitar on the operating table? Or what about a video game?  Please comment below and for more WTF moments, keep it locked to!
