Matadi, the 8-year-old boy with a tumor on his face, underwent cardiac arrest, during surgery to remove the tumor.
On a trip to the Congo, Dikembe Mutombo, a retired basketball player, learned of the boy’s condition. Matadi was being shunned by his community, and had even been forced to be removed from school, due to harrassment. Mutombo flew the young boy to Los Angeles, from the Congo, to receive the life-changing surgery.
He and his family were staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Los Angeles, until the surgery, scheduled for Sunday. The boy suffered cardiac arrest, after more than six hours into the procedure. Doctors had to rush him to Intensive Care Unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A.
It’s unclear if they surgery was complete, before the heart malfunction.
Matadi is safely recovering.
