During this #MeToo movement, many are questioning the controversial, date rape lyrics to an American Christmas classic “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” And many believe Bill Cosby is the blame…
This is not the first time that we have heard this argument. If you’ve listened to the lyrics, some questions should be brewing. And the daughter of the Broadway composer Frank Loesser has some answers.
I think my father would be furious at that. People used to say ‘what’s in this drink’ as a joke. You know, ‘this drink is going straight to my head so what’s in this drink? ‘ Back then it didn’t mean you drugged me.”
But she absolutely understands the current context of the lyrics.
Absolutely I get it. I think it would be good if people looked at the song in the context of the time. It was written in 1944.
But, wait. So in 1944, people weren’t getting drugged? Date rape didn’t exist? Anyways, she continues:
Bill Cosby ruined it for everybody. Way before #MeToo, I would hear from time to time people call it a date rape song. I would get annoyed because it’s a song my father wrote for him and my mother to sing at parties. But ever since Cosby was accused of drugging women, I hear the date rape thing all the time.”
So correction. Bill Cosby did ruin it. And so did your father who wrote these tasteless lyrics. We’ve been having this debate way before Cosby. This is nothing new. So try again Ms. Susan Loesser!
