Quavo performs “Without You” at the 2023 Grammys

The annual Grammy Awards show can be a sea of sound and fury, but occasionally it will broadcast a moment that is genuine. That was the case Sunday night, when rapper Quavo performed an emotional tribute to late Migos member Takeoff.

The 31-year-old rapper was joined by Atlanta gospel group Maverick City Music for the performance. He was dressed in an all-black ensemble with a simple silver chain and a mask that covered half his face, while images of Takeoff were screened behind him.

He began his performance with an empty chair in front of him to represent his deceased bandmate. Next, singers from the choir emerged and started singing “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth.

When the choir finished their song, Quavo stood up from his stool and held Takeoff’s diamond-encrusted chain to the sky. This was a touching moment for the Migos fan base, as Takeoff passed away in November last year at the age of 28.

Despite the tragedy, Quavo and Takeoff were close friends. In addition to their rap careers, they also collaborated on several songs together.

However, they had a falling out in 2022 due to differences with their fellow Migos members Offset and Cardi B. They referred to Offset as not being as dedicated to their band as they were, and took aim at him in the song “Hotel Lobby.”

In honor of his late nephew, Quavo released the track “Without You” on January 20, just two months after his death. The song is a beautiful eulogy to the rapper, and it truly touched fans.
