A Netflix documentary on the life of the great Nipsey Hussle is reportedly in the works with Ava DuVernay at the helm, both producing and directing it, according to Deadline.
The documentary will be produced between DuVernay’s ARRAY banner and Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon Films. After an intense bidding war with both Apple and Amazon, the project was secured by Netflix. The film based on Nipsey’s life is DuVernay’s first return to documentaries since 13th. The Emmy-award winning criminal justice, race, and mass incarceration film. Since the release of 13th, she has produced and directed the science adventure film A Wrinkle in Time, another Emmy-winning series in When They See Us and, most recently, Cherish the Day, a romantic drama series about a couple and their stirring relationship told in a single day.
Nipsey Hussle’s fatal shooting last March in L.A. shocked not only the people of the city but also many others across the country and the world of music. Nipsey was someone who many saw as more than just an artist. He was someone who achieved more than just commercial success, promoting artist empowerment, self-invest, ownership, and community activism. The artist and activist has received an outpour of tributes since his passing. Most recently, Ava DuVernay led a tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle at the 2020 Grammy Awards. A tribute performed by Meek Mill, DJ Khaled, and John Legend.
Ava DuVernay is an excellent choice to helm a documentary based on Nipsey Hussle’s life.
