Southern Cali Native Adanna Duru Takes Stance On Objectification

Written and composed by Adanna Duru herself, and produced by Ear Mac, ‘Doll’ is the first single from the LA native’s forthcoming sophomore EP Manic Pixie Dreamgirl. The excellently crafted R&B offering is a moody and atmospheric affair, backed by wobbly synths, fitting piano stabs, and a riveting bassline, over which Adanna continues to wear her heart on her sleeves, underpinned by her emotive vocal performance, and honest songwriting.
Directed by Sterling Hampton and Riveting Entertainment, who has worked with Chris Brown, Cardi B, G Eazy, and Lady Gaga, among others, the visuals see Adanna Duru embracing being seen as a doll. According to Adanna, “in the video, I represent a life-size doll. I’m beautiful, quirky, charismatic, and easy to love. I was styled by John Jimenez – he put me in the cutest outfits, and although those are all great things, being a doll means you don’t have a voice. You might be pretty, but you’re an object, and that’s trash”.

Speaking further about the inspiration behind ‘Doll’, Adanna Duru says,

This song describes how I’ve felt about my dating life. I’ve always felt like an object of desire, rather than a human being, with actual wants, needs, and dreams. It was always about the guys and what they wanted, and I was really just expected to be at their beck and call, whenever they decided they wanted me around. I was happy to be there. I love to give and I love to love. But, I have never experienced having that same effort reciprocated.

    She continues,

I know I’m not the only person that feels this way. I know plenty of men who have been treated this same way in their dating lives as well. This song is about demanding more & and expecting more. I am a woman who is beautiful and precious in any era, and I should be recognized as such. The song’s hook was originally going to be ‘I wanna be your doll’, but then I realized that I don’t. I’m tired of being seen as an idea. I want to be someone’s everything”.
