    Robin Thede Talks Show Inception

Back in 2019, Theade discusses how her show will be different than traditional comedy shows.

“I aim to create work that makes people feel seen, important, and joyful, even in sketches that are thrillers or horror parodies. A Black Lady Sketch Show has those moments where you’ll feel like it was made for you, and that brings me joy.”

She also discussed Black female representation in comedy.influenced her casting process.

    The State of Black Comedy

Later on, Thede spoke highly about seizing the opportunity for diverse Black women in comedy.

Thede said, “The representation of Black women in comedy is crucial. For this show, it was vital to cast diverse sizes, ages, and shades of Black women, as those opportunities have been limited in the past.”

“I’ve thought about the representation of Black women in this industry. There’s discrimination, sexism, and racism that have affected darker-skinned, larger, and older Black women, limiting their opportunities compared to others.”

Be sure to check the six episode series out, which airs on April 23. It will simultaneously be available to stream on HBO Max.
